THE DEATH OF M. GOGOL IN THE PERCEPTION OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES: THE ESSAY BY G. GALAGAN “FRIENDS”

Abstract
Republication of a document on personal papers of a public and cultural figure in the middle — the second half of the 19th century Gregory Pavlovych Galagan is dedicated to the commemorative date — 155th anniversary since the death of Mykola Gogol. The same number of years has passed since the appearance of the text itself. It was written two weeks after the writer’s death. By genre it is an essay. Gregory Galagan had a tendency toward literary work. After him there were few published and even more unpublished literary materials. The content of this work illustrates the author’s attitude towards M. Gogol’s personality and illustrates his ideological and civic position during the time of the so-called “gloomy sevenfold” in the political history of the Russian Empire. This is 1848–1855 — the last period of the reign of Nicholas I. The content of the document is amplified by its excited-personal intonation. Republication of this essay will broaden the concept of mentally-minded people from the circle of the Ukrainian elite in the middle of the 19th century.
