The descriptive study ofsexuallytransmitted infections (STI) among adultsattending a STI clinicin an urban slum of Mumbai

Abstract
Background: Sexually transmitted infections are major public health problem in India. This study was undertaken to see the socio-demographic profile and reproductive behaviour of patients with STIs. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted on 180 patients attending a STI clinic in Urban Mumbai after getting informed consent. Treatment was provided to them according to NACO guidelines. Results: A total of 180 patients were interviewed for this study.Most patients i.e. 59(32.78%) belonged to age group 25-30, 146(81.11%) were females and 34 (18.89%) were males. Among female most common complaint was vaginal discharge 128(87.67%) followed by 9 (6.16%) of lower abdominal pain, and 9(6.16%) of genital ulcers. While most common complaint in males was of urethral discharge,25(73.52%), 2(5.88%) had herpetic genital ulcers. Inguinal bubo and non herpetic genital ulcer was found in 3(8.82) and 4 (11.76%). High risk sexual behavior was found in 14(73.68%) males and 5(6.17%) females. Presence of STI/RTI in spouse/ partner was found among 16 subjects. Consistent use of barrier method of contraceptives was present in only 21 males. Knowledge regarding STI/RTI as a risk factor for HIV/AIDS transmission was found only in 2 patients.
