The dynamics of cohesion and separation in the syntax of postmodern artistic text (based on the novel by Michel Houellebecq «The Elementary Particles»).

Abstract

In the presented scientific research the problem of dynamics of syntactic connections in the text fabric of the French postmodern work is considered. On the material of Michel Houellebecq novel «The Elementary Particles», the features of cohesion and separation in the syntax of contemporary French language are analyzed. As the research testified, textual fragments of the postmodern work harmoniously combine different means of communication. On the one hand, we note the syntactic integrity, the completeness of the structure, the hierarchical subordination of parts within the whole, causative-consecutive coherence, accuracy, logic, rationalism (cohesion), on the other hand fragmentation, collage, subjectivity of expression, irrationalism, and dismemberment of syntactic structures (separation). Cohesion claims the classical (normative, hierarchical) type of syntax; separation reflects the principles of the actual type of syntax. It is established that the syntactic structure of postmodern text enables the combination of opposite means of communication (cohesion and separation) based on their equilibrium, equivalent content and meaning. Thus, the syntactic fabric of French postmodern prose is a combination of the classical (normative) and actual types of syntax. The analysis of the material motivates the isolation of the neutral level of the dynamics of cohesion and separation in the syntactic fabric of the postmodern text and affirmed the dialectical path of their development. It is substantiated that the balanced, restrained manner of Michel Houellebecq writing in «The Elementary Particles » was an ideal form for creating a picture of the modern mercantile world, and the combination of cohesion and separation as syntactic means of communication enabled the implementation of creative ideas of the author on the syntactic and stylistic level. Consequently, in the culture of postmodernism, different pictures of the world are displayed, different types of thinking develop, new reality is created, a new language of culture, and a new text.
