The Dynamics of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the Republic of Karakalpakstan Based on the Epidemiological Studies of 1998, 2004 and 2014
Journal Title: Міжнародний ендокринологічний журнал - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 68
Abstract
The article summarizes the results of monitoring for iodine deficiency disorders in Karakalpakstan from 1998 to 2014. In accordance with the WHO recommendations, there were assessed the following indicators: the prevalence of goiter in the population, determination of urinary iodine concentration, determination of iodine in table salt. The positive dynamics to reduce the prevalence of endemic goiter (from 71 to 56 %) has been revealed. The proportion of severe iodine deficiency (based on ioduria median) decreased from 94.5 % in 1998 to 4.4 % in 2014. However, the consumption of iodized salt in households (according to a study of 2014) does not exceed 30 %. Thus, most of the children in Karakalpakstan (70 %) to date consume salt that does not meet the GOST.
