The Effect of Animacy on the Acquisition of Scrambling on Learning Turkish as a Second Language by Adult Native Speakers of Japanese and English

Abstract

In this study, it is analyzed that whether there is a difference between the acquisition of SO and OS word order and whether it is the effect of animacy or not. The animacy effect on L2 adult acquisition of scrambling is studied. The acquisition of scrambling property of Turkish L2 learners by adult native speakers of Japanese –in which there is scrambling property- and English –in which scrambling property is restricted-is studied. In the study, the canonical and the scrambled sentences that obtain two nouns, which are animate-animate, animate-inanimate, inanimate-animate, inanimateinanimate featured, are studied. It is analyzed whether there is an acquisition difference between the canonical and the scrambled sentences and also between the animacy types. Studying the effect of animacy knowledge on the acquisition of scrambling property, the effect of L1 on L2 acquisition is analyzed. In addition, whether there is a success difference between the comprehension and production tests are compared.
