The effect of cellulose added to straw bedding on turkeys’ welfare and production results
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2010, Vol 28, Issue 4
Abstract
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of addition of cellulose to straw litter on the degree of bedding encrustation as well as on turkeys’ welfare and production results. Birds were kept either on straw mixed with cellulose (sector PC) or on straw only (sector PS). During the experiment, once a week, degree of litter surface encrustation and health state of turkeys legs were determined. Birds’ weight and mortality were recorded. The addition of cellulose to straw litter resulted in slower tempo of bedding encrustation and lesser occurrence of leg deformation. Cellulose application contributed to improved welfare of birds and increased production results (lower mortality and higher final body weight).

Relation between fearfulness level and maternal behaviour in Arab mares
The study aimed at testing the hypothesis that mares’ fearfulness is a potential factor differentiating the level of their maternal behaviour. Twenty purebred Arab mares were used. In part one of the study fearfulness of...
Metabolism of fatty acids in tissues and organs of the ruminants - a review
Fatty acid metabolism in the rumen is a meaningful, but not the only variation factor of fatty acid profile in milk and meat of the ruminants. Lipids absorbed in the small intestine are transported by lipoproteins to dif...
Single-step genomic evaluation for linear type traits of Holstein cows in Czech Republic
The single-step method of genomic evaluation using both a uni-trait and a multi-trait animal model was applied for 20 linear type traits of Holstein cows in the Czech Republic. Phenotypic data on linear scoring were avai...
Polymorphism in coding and regulatory sequences of beta-casein gene is associated with milk production traits in Holstein-Friesian cattle
Beta-casein gene (CSN2) is considered a marker of milk production traits in dairy cattle. Allele A2, the most common in Holstein-Friesian breed, is beneficial for milk protein yield. However, within CSN2 other mutations...
