The effect of nutritional protocols on mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care unit: A randomised controlled study
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Clinical Anaesthesia - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction Critically ill patients are prone to develop malnutrition which is a major contributory factor to the already existing burden of morbidity and mortality Early nutrition support is an effective therapy to prevent malnutrition when patients are unable to take oral nutritionAim To determine the effectiveness of a nutrition support protocol versus nonprotocol management on initiating nutrition support in ICU patientsMaterials and Methods This randomized controlled study was conducted on fifty critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation with twenty five patients in each group Nutrition protocols were followed in Group I patients and group II comprised of nonprotocolised patientsResults Hospital stay for group I patients was 227 days while group II patients stayed for 319 days pvalue Conclusion Patients in whom nutrition support protocols were followed received enteral nutrition earlier had early weaning from ventilator spent less time in ICU as well as hospital and had lesser complications with low mortality Keywords Enteral nutrition Nutrition protocol Malnutrition Mechanical ventilation ICU

Pretreatment of magnesium sulphate accelerates neuromuscular block as compared to vecuronium priming – A randomized trial
Background: Action of non depolarising neuromuscular relaxants can be potentiated by small dose of priming. Priming reduces the time of onset of muscle relaxants by binding and occupying the choline receptors. Whereas ma...
Increasing fresh gas flows of oxygen in a circle absorber system for preoxygenation. Is it really efficacious?
Introduction Preoxygenation is a routine practice prior to induction of general anaesthesia The fresh gas flow FGF of oxygen used is an important factor for an effective preoxygenation and the end tidal oxygen fraction F...
Comparison of intrathecal levobupivacaine and levobupivacaine with fentanyl in caesarean section - a randomised trial
Introduction: Levobupivacaine is less cardio toxic and has a longer duration of analgesia compared to bupivacaine. There are limited studies comparing the effects of addition of fentanyl with levobupivacaine. To compare...
Efficacy of risk score dependent antiemetic regimens in reduction of post operative nausea and vomiting
Postoperative nausea and vomiting PONV is a common complication after anaesthesia Although self limiting and non fatal it can cause significant morbidity and delay discharge The intention of doing this study was to evalu...
Low flow anaesthesia: economic, eco friendly and effective
Introduction: Low flow anaesthesia, a technique introduced by Foldes in 1952 has resurged in clinical practice due to easy availability of low solubility inhalational agents. Being economical, ecological and clinically a...
