THE EFFECTS OF BUTYLATED HYDROXYL TOLUENE ON THE TOTAL ANTİOXİDANT STATUS/ TOTAL OXİDANT STRESS AND BİOCHEMİCAL PARAMETERS IN RATS

Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 5

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) in different doses on the serum total oxidant stress (TOS), antioxidant status (TAS) and biochemical parameters in rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty five female Wistar rats weighing 200-250 gr were divided into 5 groups, each containing seven rats. The control, group 1 (25 mg/kg BHT), group 2 (50 mg/kg BHT), group 3 (200 mg/kg BHT) and group 4 (500 mg/kg BHT). Different doses of BHT (oral gavage) were administered for twelve weeks. Results: It was determined that TAS level was significantly decreased, whereas the TOS levels was increased in all BHT administered groups in comparison with control group. In the groups 3 and 4, there was a significant in increase ALP activity and decrease albumin level. The GGT activity and BUN, urea levels were observed to be increased significant in groups 2, 3 and 4. The globulin level was found to be increased only in group 4 compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result, with regard to the data acquired in this study, BHT may lead to functional failure in the liver and kidney depending on the dose and duration of application by causing oxidative stress.
