THE EMERGENCE OF MULTIMEDIA, HYPERTEXTUALITY AND INTERACTIVITY ON LOCAL NEWS SITES: HOW ODESA ELECTRONIC EDITIONS DOMESTICATE WWW (ON THE MATERIAL OF «REPORTER» AND «DUMSKAYA» SITES)

Abstract
The first mass media on the internet were the copies of offline media. Journalists as well as readers were not ready for multimedia, hypertext and interactivity. News media throughout the world still demonstrate low levels of multimedia (texts and photo dominate), hypertextuality (linear texts dominate) and interactivity (and readers don’t have a possibility to influence news agenda). The oldest and the most popular Odesa news sites were examined in this study to understand, how multimedia, hypertextuality and interactivity were embedded into content. «Reporter» (was founded in 2004) and «Dymskaya» (was founded in 2008) were studied. Between 2005-2009 multimedia, hypertext and interactivity almost were not used, though, both sites don’t have offline analogues. During the first years the sites just copied offline information agency manner. Between 2009-2010 the number of photo increased, video was used rarely (in 7-16% cases). Those facts correlates with a consideration about news texts on the internet are fit for reading, not viewing or interacting with. In those years the number of links also increased, however, only one of three – five texts contained a link. The model with one link per one text didn’t take root on «Reporter». The tendency to connect all the texts on a site with a web (according to T. Berners-Lee) was not also observed. The two models of interactivity were discovered: a passive one (on «Reporter», were a few comments were added to political or breaking news, sometimes comments were the sign of a «jeansa») and an active one (on «Dumskaya», where commentators were encouraged since the first years of existence). However, there is not a correlation between the number of comments per text and the exclusivity of the text. Thus, speaking about the technologies in the sphere of news production, one should consider the specifics of the texts perception. In the great amount of cases, consumers usually just read a headline and don’t click on the text. News reading is usually fast, so the big number of multimedia and links may just disturb a consumer. Interactivity is important for both – local journalism and democracy processes, though a new site usually publish more than 30 texts per day, so there is not possible to comment them all. That’s why journalists and editors should design an appropriate model for a discussion about local affairs.
