The European Union: A Crisis of National Identity and the Welfare Myth

Abstract
The article deals with the problems of the European Union as a supra-state, supranational phenomenon, created according to the principle of a pyramid. The authors demonstrate that the states which make up this federation and form the European community derive not only benefits but also face a number of negative phenomena, including economic dependence, the status of a raw material appendage, social capital drain, etc. Special attention is paid to national identity, which is losing its significance in the European community. Taking advantage of the modern information space and motivated by the desire for material goods, the younger generation, neglecting their national consciousness, tries to move to countries with a stable economy. Such aspirations give rise to waves of migration that can be observed in the modern world: Poles emigrate to Germany, Spain, Great Britain; Ukrainians move to Poland, and so on. These migration processes pose a threat to the status of some states. Only those countries which can retain social resources within their territories and can transform them into social capital certain using social political filters, can succeed in the long run. The authors argue that the Western civilization is expanding to the east by means of artificial values, selling the promise of happiness to people.
