THE EVALUATION OF THE ABRASIVE WEAR OF THE TI13Nb13ZR ALLOY IMPLANTED BY NITROGEN IONS FOR FRICTION COMPONENTS OF THE HIP JOINT ENDOPROSTHESES

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 264, Issue 6

Abstract

Due to social needs, and especially the growing demand for the hip and knee prostheses and taking into account the fact that the tribological processes play a leading role in the loss of the stability of orthopaedic prostheses and determines their durability, it was considered to be important to assess the impact of the ion implantation on the abrasive wear of Ti13Nb13Zr bio-alloy. For the study, the following friction pairs were used: not implanted Ti13Nb13Zr alloy/PE-UHMW, and Ti13Nb13Zr alloy/PE-UHMW implanted with N+ ions. For the tribological tests, a Ti13Nb13Zr alloy was selected for several reasons: It contains no potentially toxic elements; it has a Young's modulus that is similar to the modulus of bone, with good mechanical properties and a medical certificate for use. The preliminary tribological tests of the Ti alloy carried out earlier by the authors revealed its low resistance to abrasive wear. Therefore, the authors applied the ion implantation of N+ ions to Ti13Nb13Zr alloy in order to improve its tribological properties. The tribological tests of the friction pairs were carried out by means of a PT-3 tribometer. In the article, the tests results of the roughness and waviness and the observations of friction surfaces of the tested biomaterials carried out by means of the light microscope (LM) were presented. The impact of the ion implantation of the investigated Ti alloy on its wear intensity in the aspect of its practical use on friction pairs in the hip replacement was also determined. The result analysis indicated that, for the assumed parameters of the ion implantation process, the implanted samples wear out much more slowly than the non- -implanted samples.
