It is proved that the question of perfect mastering of the phonetic system of the Ukrainian language, its deep theoretical study in the elementary school, is actual and quite acute, because the degree of formation in the younger students of phonetic and graphic competence is the most important prerequisite for the formation of all types of speech activity. It is emphasized that effective methods of formation of phonetic-graphic competence are sound and sound-letter analyzes, which help to understand the sequence of sounds in the word, to establish correct correlations between sounds and letters, the development of phonemic hearing, which in turn helps to overcome the defects of pronunciation and the formation of valuable phonemic representations. The study of phonetics and graphics of the Ukrainian language requires a scientific understanding of sound and graphic systems, taking into account the peculiarities of their learning by students of different age groups, the application of new technologies of language learning.
