THE GAME OF TROY AND AUGUSTUS

Journal Title: Analele Universitatii Ovidius Constanta Seria Istorie - Year 2011, Vol 8, Issue 0

Abstract

This article is a study of the game of Troy, lusus Troiae, as a sociopolitical phenomenon in the Augustan Age. I argue that Augustus for the first time limited participation in the Troy game to sons of senators, and thus used the game for two new purposes: 1. Reconciling senatorial youth and, through it, the senate itself to his rule and its future continuation by his sons, who were the leaders in the game. 2. Satisfying the urges of the senators at the time to perform on stage and in the circus.
