The importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in lay persons: An integrative review

Abstract
The immediate performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in victims of cardiac arrest (CRA) is paramount for their survival. However, we can see that the prevalence of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in laypersons is considerably lower in the world, because they find it difficult to perform this procedure. It is essential to recognize the first signs and symptoms of a CRA in order to start the chain of survival procedures early, because it is understood that every second counts in an emergency. Thus, the aim is to identify the laymen's knowledge about CPR, through reading available in databases. The present study is a bibliographic research of the integrative literature review type, using indexed and non-indexed descriptors in English and Portuguese in the databases: PubMed of the National Library of Medicine and Virtual Health Library. Eight publications with a greater theoretical reference of studies published in the years 2015 to 2019 were selected. It was found that the highest number of cardiac arrests occurred in neighborhoods with lower purchasing power when compared to neighborhoods with higher socioeconomic status, this is linked to barriers that hinder the learning of CPR such as: lack of motivation by this target audience, accessibility of language and material that facilitates understanding to act when necessary. Therefore, it is essential to create a CPR program that meets these different audiences and also to simplify the maneuvers of high-quality chest compressions in CPR training for lay people, thus making them disseminators of knowledge.
