The influence of ancient Egyptian culture on the formation and content of the Bavarian Order of Illuminati (1776-1784)

Abstract

This article examines the impact of the ancient Egyptian culture on the Bavarian secret society. The Order of the Illuminati during the period of 1776-1784. The main purpose of the article is the study of elements of ancient Egyptian culture in the structure of the Order of Illuminati. For the objective coverage of this topic in this article, three main objectives of the study were identified. The main tasks consist of: the study of the history of the spread of ancient Egyptian culture in Europe in New Time, the disclosure of the history of the Order of the Bavarian Illuminates in the period 1776-1784 and the study of the influence of ancient Egyptian culture on the Bavarian Order of Illuminati. Particular attention was paid to the meaningful analysis of the symbols of illuminates and internal doctrine. It should be noted that this topic in the given context is almost uncovered in the historiography of secret societies. In the article, much attention was paid to the dialectical development of «Egyptology» as a separate historical science of ancient Egypt. The specificity of the chosen topic allowed us to use a wide range of different methods and historical sources. In addition to the historiography of secret societies and general historical literature, the literature is actively used in the mythological system of Ancient Egypt. This approach allows the widest and most comprehensive discovery of the secret symbolism of the Order of Illuminati and establishes a clear connection with the Old-Egyptian Culture.
