The Investigation of the Effects of Using Natural Gas on the Performance and Exhaust Emissions in an HCCI-DI Engine

Abstract

In this study, the effects of compressed natural gas (CNG) charge on the engine performance and exhaust emissions were investigated in a single-cylinder, four stroke, HCCI-DI diesel engine. The experiments were conducted at the maximum torque speed of 2200 rpm under full load (16 Nm) operating conditions. Premixed CNG fuel was delivered to the designed intake manifold using a pressure reducer and sensitive gas flow meter. In the experiments, the maximum torque that the engine gives under standard diesel fuel operation was decreased between 0 - 90 % at an interval of 10% and the same torque value was obtained with CNG fuel delivered to the intake manifold. In the experiments, specific fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and soot emissions were investigated with torque variation ratio from 0 – 90%. Specific fuel consumption, CO and soot emissions decreased by 17.19%, 93.67% and 97.95%, respectively, at 90% torque change rate with M10C90 compared to pure diesel fuel (M100) experiments. In addition to this, thermal efficiency increased by 10.02%, HC and NOx emissions increased by 50% and 186%.
