The knowledge of Public Medical Higher School in Opole students related to the blood donation movement – analysis of a survey

Abstract
Background: Blood Donor Movement is a social action which aims at obtain the blood from healthy persons for people which need blood transfusion. This is only possible thanks to a solid base of blood donors, and modern medicine could not function without the use of blood. Promoting the idea ofvoluntary blood donation among students is very important, because they are potential blood donors. The results of the survey indicate the areas of knowledge, which in promoting voluntary blood donation should especially focus to attract new donors.Aim of the study: To recognize the knowledge level of PMWSZ students about Blood Donor Movement and treatment of the blood.Material and methods: The research was cary on with using diagnostic survey method. An author’s questionnaire had been filled in anonymous and voluntary by 100 PMWSZ in Opole students. The analysis was taken in the “R” statistic program and PSPP program with the significance level p < 0,05. The material was analysed with considering college level, achieved medical education, active blood donating and contact with blood donators.Results: 85% of students recognise their knowledge in this area on medium level. 82% know that blood donating is not habit- forming. 65% of participants are aware that there is no risk of blood overproduction in case of regular donating. 47% gave correct answer to question relate to chemotherapy. 22% of respondents are aware that blood donation does not create risk for the donator. Among 50% respondents there occurs incorrect beliefs about blood donators privileges.Conclusions: The greatest knowledge of blood donation and transfusion have the honor blood donors The hypothesis that the older students, persons with achieved medical education and people who have contact which blood donators have bigger knowledge about the Blood Donor Movement has not been confirmed.
