The Later Wittgenstein, Forms of Life and Religious Belief

Abstract
The term "forms of life" has been used only seven times in the published writings of Wittgenstein while none of them has provided an adequate explanation. It has been mentioned five times in his "Philosophical Investigations", once in "On Certainty" and once in "Lecture on Religious Belief". In this paper, we will present some documentary evidences about Wittgenstein which demonstrate that the concept of forms of life is inherently ambiguous and that an apparent internal inconsistency is evident in Wittgenstein's works. Certainly, as long as this concept is not disambiguated, it will be unable of loading all those important issues about thinking and language. In the next step, we will go through the Wittgenstein's view on religious belief, what is recognized by him as use of a picture that is not the reflection of reality but the emotional structure of the believer which helps him/her see everything with a certain religious look; thus, he does not acknowledge the religious propositions as the doctrines of reality. Discussing this matter, we will then criticize this view from the view point of monotheistic religions.
