The liturgical function of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orgelbüchlein. An introduction for organists

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 8

Abstract

The article starts with a discussion on the problems connected with the writing of the manuscript, especially the issue of dating of each composition. For reference purposes, Russel Stinson’s proposition was adopted, and Stinson divides the creation of Orgelbüchlein into three phases: early, ca. 1708–1712; middle, ca. 1712–1716 (with a subdivision into middle I: 1712–1713 and middle II: 1715–1716) and late, ca. 1716–1717. Following that, the article discusses the potential place of the described chorales during a liturgy and it singles out their three potential uses: as a prelude, interlude or accompaniment to the singing Lutheran congregation or choir during a service. Then it touches on the issue of the so-called “Bach organ” in the context of Orgelbüchlein, mainly focusing on the instrument kept at the Weimar ducal chapel (Weg zur Himmelsburg), where Bach worked as an organist. Based on the example of BWV 600, the study aimed to establish how important the organ disposition is for contemporary performance practice.
