The manual therapy influence on the reduction of migraine pain

Journal Title: Rehabilitacja Medyczna - Year 2011, Vol 15, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Research concerning the role of spine manipulation and other manual techniques in the treatment of migraine headaches has been conducted for years. The use of manual therapy in treating a migraine-sufferer may lead to an increase in joint mobility, decrease of strain in excessively tensed muscles, standardization of the state of soft tissues tension and the elimination of trigger points.Aim: Comparison of the influence of manual therapy and pharmacological treatment on the change of pain symptom levels for patients suffering from chronic migraines.Material and methods: Two groups of patients were examined – one that was treated with manual therapy and the other with pharmacotherapy. Each group comprised 30 patients. The change in pain levels was measured with the use of the MPQ questionnaire (McGill Pain Questionnaire). Measurements were carried out three times – before treatment, directly after the completion of treatment and three months after the completion of treatment. Results: In the manual therapy group patients suffering from migraines experience reduced levels of pain. The obtained low level of pain is also maintained three months after the completion of therapy. However, the greater effectiveness of manual therapy in reducing the pain symptoms of migraine patients when compared to pharmacotherapy in both the short-term (right after therapy) and the longterm effect (three months after the completion of therapy) has not been confirmed. Conclusions: Manual therapy effectively reduces the level of pain symptoms in migraine-suffering patients. The reduction of pain caused by manual therapy is not more effective than the reduction of pain caused by pharmacotherapy.
