The Metaphor of Theater in the American and Ukrainian Political Discourse

Abstract

The article is devoted to defining the specific features of the secondary nomination units functioning, which act as verbalizers of the theatrical metaphorical model to designate the realia of socio-political life in the American and Ukrainian linguistic cultures. Methodology of metaphorical modeling was used to determine metaphorical models. The metaphorical model contains the source sphere and the target sphere. Conceptual metaphor is not the same as a metaphorical model. It is a mental operation that generates new knowledge, and the metaphorical model only reflects this mechanism. A frame as one of the varieties of analysis of the metaphorical model helps to distinguish its essential features, and then determine what is typical of a particular culture and what is specific. The analysis of the metaphor of the corresponding linguistic culture contributed to the outlining specific images in the political discursive practice. The analysis has shown that structure of the frames THEATER and ТЕАТР has common and different positions, the common ones are: name of the action (play, shows, вистава), subject (actors, актори), object (applaud, глядач). Different positions are the locative (stage) in the frame structure of THEATER and the attribute of the actant (реквізит) in the frame structure of ТЕАТР. Conceptual metaphor synthesizes cognitive processes and linguistic competence of not only the individual, but also the whole linguocultural community. The comparison of the metaphorical pictures of the world most clearly reveals the features of the national perception of political realia.
