Journal Title: Psychiatry, Neurology and Medical Psychology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 8

Abstract

Modern views on the etiopathogenesis of suicidal behavior in patients with dementia are highlighted on the basis of the review of scientifc periodicals. The role of demographic, gender, socioeconomic, psychological influences on the formation of a life crisis in the form of suicidal behavior is indicated. The leading clinical and psychopathological correlates of suicide in this group of patients are depression and anxiety; feeling of hopelessness and helplessness; decrease of the amount of operative memory; reduction of cognitive control over emotions; mild cognitive defciency; relatively preserved social functioning; duration of the disease up to 1 year; presence of suicidal history. Factors decreasing the risk of suicide at dementia according to literature data are the prescription of the disease for more than three years; stay in a boarding school; absence of comorbid depression; deep cognitive defciency. Comprehensive care for patients with dementia is carried out within the limits of the biopsychosocial model.
