THE NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES IN ALEKSANDR SOLZHENITSYN’S “ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH”

Abstract

Aleksandr Isaevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) is one of the authors of the third wave of Russian emigration literature, he is a Soviet Russian novelist, who was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. Because he served in several different work camps and was sent to exile, he writes realistically about wars, revolutions, exile, Soviet prison camp system. Solzhenitsyn’s own experiences during his imprisonment at the working camp became the basis of his books. The book of “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” is set in a Soviet working camp in the 1950s and describes a single day of Ivan Denisovich Shukhov, who was sentenced to working camp. It was first published in 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine “Novy Mir”. This book is based on Soviet camps, working at brutal camp lives. In this book is idealized the people, who were trying to survive and protect their own personality. In modern and postmodern narration types narrative techniques provide the richness and functionality of expression. In this study we aim to analyze the narrative techniques with examples the book of “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.” Solzhenitsyn uses in his book narrative techniques such as dialog, description, leitmotif, letter etc.
