Journal Title: The Journal of Turkic Language and Literature Surveys (TULLIS) - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
The encounter of the Turkish literature with the novel coincided with period that Ottoman Empire with all the energy attempted to the Westernization. This anxiety of change brought about a dilemma between the East and the West of the intellectual and society. Criticizing the corruption that came with the change of civilization, Europeanism (misunderstanding of the westernization) by writers entered to the novel, the new literary genre of the period. Ahmet Mithat Efendi, who looked from his duty to train people about novel, built his novel - Felatun Bey and Râkim Efendi- on a basis of Eastern-Western civilization and false westernization. The main problem of the Empire was revealed through two characters. Felatun Bey and Rahim Efendi were compared as two poles. Oblomov, which is regarded as one of the important products of the Russian novel, resulted in the settlement of the concept of "oblomovism". Ilya Ilyiç, a Russian noble, is an embodiment of the character of the Russian Empire. On the other hand, Ştoltz represents the west with hard work. In both romans, the two empires have similarities with themselves and their attitudes towards the Western perception. The work to be done will attempt to reveal the overlapping and different aspects of the two empire novels that have entered the Westernization struggle over the heroes.
