THE OXIDATION STABILITY AND LUBRICATING PROPERTIES OF OIL COMPOSITIONS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 239, Issue 5

Abstract

The oxypolymerization process of plant oil was modified with application of antioxidant (Irganox, BASF) and/or with infusion of an inert gas through the reaction mixture in order to obtain stabilised lubricating properties of lubricating oils. It was concluded that the modification of the oxypolymerization process influenced both the oxidative stability and the lubricating properties of the obtained oils. Based on Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) and the temperature at which oxidation begins (OOT), the resistance and stability of obtained oils were determined by means of thermal analysis. Using standard tribological tests, supplemented by additional tests under seizing conditions, the oil’s resistance to seizing and wearing was also tested. Modification of oxypolimnerization process of plant oil in which oils of a higher viscosity class have been obtained and lead to the improvement of oxidative stability of oils and an increase in the life-time of the lubricant film.
