Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 47

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the perspectives of students on gender roles in terms of femininity and masculinity norms in the social life in 2015-2016 the fall semester academic year in Ege University Faculty of Sport Sciences. Used as a data collection tool in the study, the questionnaire including items related to demographic features and "Gender Roles Attitude Scale" developed by Zeyneloğlu was administered to a total of 200 students, including 66 girls and 134 boys. In data analysis, independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney test and one-way analysis of variance, Tukey, Bonferroni and Tamhane T2 tests were utilized. When the opinions of students regarding the social gender roles were analyzed, a statistically significant difference between the groups in the great majority of propositions (p <0.05) was found. Aside from male and female roles ascribed by biological gender, ascribing different roles to both male and female individuals by each society is considered as an inequality, which expresses traditionalism. In this context, it is worrisome that male students are more tradition-driven than female students in terms of gender roles. However, the fact that senior year (4th year) students have a more modern attitute than freshmen can be explained by the fact that the experience and knowledge they obtain throughout their university education have a good contribution on their being more aware in terms on social gender roles, thus letting them be more sensitive individuals.
