The phenomenon of plagiarism among Polish students in light of the analysis of term papers
Journal Title: International Journal of Pedagogy, Innovation and New Technologies - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The plagiarism has been examined in the world and in Poland mainly on the based of data from surveys saddled with high level of subjectivity. Authors conducted research in this field by document analysis technique. The documents were first versions of educational presentation made by freshmen of The Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw in order to pass Lab in Information Technology, included contents protected by copyright. The passing process was carried out by original method of distance learning by exam. Only some students described in their presentations the sources of borrowed figures (45%), images (40%), and textual contents (at most 35%), and 70% of them made the descriptions in a precise manner. This indicated that they didn’t gain enough knowledge on copyright and Internet ethics at the school. Now they don’t feel dangers arising from their infringement, and haven’t the habit of describing the sources of the borrowings. None of the students didn’t indicate quoted texts with inverted commas or otherwise, what may confirm the universality of the practice to write school papers by ‘copy and paste’ method accepted by teachers. Designers of presentations who placed the descriptions of loaned images sources, usually described sources of loaned figures (Φ = 0,751; p < 0,001) and textual contents (Φ = 0,588; p < 0,001), too. This shows that the holders of awareness and habit of loaned images sources describing, also commonly describe the sources of other loaned contents. Pupils and students should learn about intellectual property rights at all levels of the education, gain awareness of their importance and feel the need to respect them. There are also important: consistent enforcement by teachers from the pupils and students to respect copyrights and netiquette, and the standardization of placing footnotes to loaned contents.
