The Poetics of the Travelogue «The Impressions of Travel Across Europe» (1939) by Volodymyr Blondinenko

Abstract

The article is about travelogue «The impressions of travel across Europe» (1939) of the American journalist of Ukrainian origin Volodymyr Blondinenko (Walter P. Blondyn). The author of the article considers the travelogue as a special narrative. As citizen of USA journalist visited the Europe and West Ukrainian lands in 1938–1939. Volodymyr Blondinenko pays special attention to the description of Ukrainian emigration in France, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland. He tells in detail about the policy of the Polish government towards national minorities, aimed at strengthening Eastern Borderlands. The travelogue «The impressions of travel across Europe» by Volodymyr Blondinenko is a kind of document of the era, where a contemporary and direct participant of events fixed the political situation in Europe on the eve of World War II. The author expressed his views on the events that led to the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, to analyse the policy of Hungary and Poland regarding the Ukrainian lands, document the situation in the region under the rule of Poland, to talk about the selfless struggle of fellow countrymen for national freedom and the right to self-determination. The binary opposition «insider / stranger» great importance gets in the text. The travelogue is structured according to cinematographic technique. The installation technique helps to create the discreteness of the image. Sound images displace the visual and form the audio-dynamic structure of individual episodes. An important role is played by the details of the general and broad plan. The author of the article first introduced into scientific circulation certain facts of the biography of Volodymyr Blondinenko.
