The port of Rosario and the Stock Exchange. Between corporate logic and inter-bourgueoise disputes (1898-1906)
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2009, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The problem of the concessions in the port of Rosario has always been plagued by inter-entrepreneur conflicts of interest, and such disputes have extended themselves to the present. But during the turning point of its construction, in particular, one of the fundamental actors was the Stock Exchange. In this sense, this process is one of the most interesting nodes through which we can try to understand some of the features of the link between the development of the regional economy, the local and foreign dominant groups and the role of the corporation in the representation of interests. In these circumstances it becomes evident how the corporation clearly outlines itself as a representation of the class interests of the local bourgeoisie, in a process in which the differentiating pole is the presence of some economic agents, representative of foreign capitals, whose quasi monopolic position in the key points of circulation put in evidence the “glass ceiling” of the local bourgeoisie. In terms of modernization, the port infrastructure in this case was an unavoidable condition for the sake of facing the new challenges that the general development of capitalism entailed, but it also introduced new challenges both in the diffcult relationship with those representatives of the foreign capital and within the local bourgeoise group represented by the corporation.
