Abstract

The period of Ukrainian colonial history had an impact on all spheres of public life. This period had a serious impact on such components of culture: literature, public life, journalism. In the Ukrainian media reports today still remained the manifestations of colonialism. The problem lies in the lack of understanding of colonial history in society. Manifestations of imperial culture and imposed myths are often perceived as identically Ukrainian. The relevance of the study is to explain the need to increase the level of media culture, an incentive for critical thinking in the perception of information provided by the media. The article analyzes the manifestations of colonialism and postcoloniality in the Ukrainian media. There are also examples of myths imposed by the Russian Empire and remained in the Ukrainian media, and therefore in the minds of ordinary Ukrainians. The research is based on the results of previous researches which present colonial myths in Ukrainian culture, literature, and political discourse. We draw our attention on the presence of similar types of myths in the Ukrainian media. The article was dedicated to publications of Ukrainian online media. The study was conducted using the method of frame analysis. We defined the basis of the news message and defined a peculiar “frame” around it, which are based at postcolonial mythologization. The result of our study is an understanding of the presence of colonial and postcolonial myths in the Ukrainian media discourse. We have isolated and illustrated the myths about the inferiority of Ukrainians towards the colonial country. Such myths should be understood, analyzed and gradually eradicated from the media messages.
