The problem of headache and professional work of nurses

Abstract

Introduction: Every day some of us experience headaches. A lot of people don’t realize, that this individual headache. Inseparable part of our lives is work. It requires a lot of commitment from us. in contrast, the headaches regardless of their nature can affect our job. Dealing with this problem is particularly important in the medical professions, as it may affect the proper and effective decisions and even become a cause of a tragedy.Aim of the study: Verify if the headache is a frequent concomitant of nurses at the Regional medical center and the Provincial Hospital in Opole, and is adversely affecting their professional activities.Material and methods: The research tool was a questionnaire consisting of 18 questions. The study was conducted in the period from the December 2013 to February 2014. 50 nurses working in the Regional Medical Center and 50 nurses from the Provincial Hospital in Opole took part in it, with the consent of the directors of these medical facilities. It was mostly women nurses that filled up the questionnaire.Results: From a group of 100 nurses, 68 confirmed that they could deal with headaches on their own when they are at work, and migraine was found among the 35 respondents.Conclusions: The questionnaire addressed to the nurses highlighted the impact of headache on their activities performed during work. The headaches, depending on their nature, have a bigger or smaller effect on nurses’ work. The pain was more severe in a larger part of the respondents while they were performing physical activities that cannot be avoided in the work of nurses.
