The Process Of Truth Telling And Nursing Approach In Cancer Patients

Abstract

Cancer is a fatal disease that interrupts human life unexpectedly. It is known as the most common reason for death following the deaths from cardiac disorders. In most people, the term “cancer” has been associated with death. Therefore, the psychosocial problems created by cancer diagnosis are inevitable. Normal response against cancer diagnosis varies from nervousness, anxiety, denial of the disease due to grief over the loss of health, and perceiving the progress of the disease as a battle or fatalistic acceptance. In the literatüre, the expression of a fatal disease has been termed as “breaking bad news”. Reporting the bad news to a patient is really a hard task for physicians because of the inability to predict how the patient and his/her relatives would react and lack of awareness on how to handle their reactions is a difficult situation for nurses and other health care personel. Generally, the experience and personality of the reporting nurse impress the informing approach. When we evaluate the explanation of the diagnosis, treatment, and progression of the disease to the patient, then we could determine whether our style of expression and our manner in order to meet the needs of the patient. Thus, this execute us the importance of education in communication skills. In this review, the ideal framework for reporting the process of telling the truth in cancer patients and nursing approach.
