Journal Title: Psychological journal - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 7

Abstract

The study is devoted to the problem of optimal functioning of the psychology students. It is known nowadays that the high level of social development is not enough for subjective wellbeing of the individual person. The economic, political and social crisis in modern Ukraine make people feel unsafe, unstable and unsure about the future. One of the most undefended part of the population is youth, as far as they are at the stage of personality and professional becoming. At the same time youth (especially students) is the society`s important intellectual and social potential. So, the students` wellbeing and hardiness is an actual and important issue of the psychology. The psychology students` wellbeing presents to be a problem of special importance as far as the own personality of a psychologist is regarded by researchers to be a professional instrument for him. So, the psychological wellbeing and hardiness are required for psychology students for effective mastering the profession. At the same time, there exist an opinion that young people with low psychological wellbeing use to choose the specialty of psychologist, because they hope to resolve their own problems in that way (Kozmina). And some researches show that many of psychology students have low levels of psychological wellbeing (Kozmina, Usynina). The goal of the paper is to examine the psychological wellbeing and hardiness indexes of the psychology students and to compare it with the indexes of the students of other specialties. The wellbeing is understood in eudemonic approach after C. Ryff as the complex of six dimensions: positive relationships with other people, autonomy, personal growth, self-acceptance, management of environment, goals in life. The model is based on the humanistic and existential approaches to the positive functioning of the personality (G. Allport, A.Maslow, C. Rogers, M. Yahoda et al.). The concept of hardiness is developed by S. Maddi and is understood as a pattern of personality`s dispositions which help to stand to difficulties of life and to accept them as a way for self-development. Hardiness includes three dimensions: commitment, control and challenge. The students of psychology, history, physics-energetics and laboratory diagnostics faculties took part in the research. The C. Ryff`s Psychological Well-being Scale and S. Maddi`s Hardiness Survey Test were used. The middle indexes of the psychological wellbeing and hardiness of the students correspond to the moderate levels. The comparison of the groups with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney methods showed that psychology students have significantly higher levels of general psychological wellbeing, personal growth, self-acceptance, positive relationships with other people, goals in life and challenge, than students of other specialties do. The conclusion is made that the young people mostly choose the profession of the psychologist not because of low personal functioning, but due to the high motivation of personal growth and high self-acceptance and interest for other people. The further studies if the dynamics of the wellbeing during the study is needed to confirm this conclusion.
