The Relationship between shift work and its effects on the health of the operational staff in Abadan Oil Refining Company

Abstract

Introduction: Shift working is a common and inevitable phenomenon. The acute and chronic effects of the shift work on the health have been proven. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between shift working and the risk factors of cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous system disorders in the operational employees of Abadan oil refinery. Methods: This analytical and cross-sectional study was performed on 328 operational workers of the refinery who were selected by the census method. The study instrument was the Survey of Shift workers (SOS) questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions about the workers demographic information, shift work system, the health effects of the shift working, and the effect of the shift working on the workers life satisfaction. Data were analyzed using the SPSS software. Results: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between shift work and sleep disorders (P-Value=0.001) and job fatigue (P-Value=0.001). The effect of the shift working in workers with overweight included 35.97% increase in gastrointestinal disorders, 5.18% increase in blood pressure, and 4.75% increase in cardiovascular disorders. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that shift working is an important risk factor for the health of the oil industry workers and due to its undesirable consequences, it should be considered.
