The results of cochlear implantation in teenagers and young adult patients with pre- and postlingual type of deafness

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate possible and achieved results of cochlear implantation in a group of pre- and postlingual deafened teenagers and young adult patients. It was assumed that the measure of success of cochlear implantation should be subjective individual assessment made by the patient himself, however, based on the basic points, defined by the cochlear implant team which job is, among the others, the assessment before the surgery. Material and methods: 36 patients in total with pre- and postlingual deafness (13–23 years of age) underwent cochlear implantation and were followed up in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical University of Warsaw. All patients underwent the audiological, psychological and logopaedic evaluation before and after the surgery, as well as in the follow-up procedure during subsequent control visits in the Department. Results: - cantly better results after implantation comparing to their prelingual peers. The subjective assessment of hearing improvement and usefulness of the device in both groups was positive. Two years after surgery three prelingual patients stopped using the system of cochlear implant. Conclusions: Patients with postlingual deafness achieved large benefits from cochlear implants. It seems that the use of such device in young patients with prelingual type of deafness, despite the lack of benefits in understanding the speech in the auditory way, the lack of improvement of language skills and articulation, is not synonymous with therapeutic failure. The final evaluation of effectiveness of cochlear implantation should consider the user opinion as well.
