The risk of malignancy in patients with celiac disease

Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 6

Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is a lifelong disorder characterized by gluten intolerance. Forover 40 years CD was regarded as a disease strongly correlated with an increased risk of various malignancies, especially intestinal cancer and lymphomas. However, until 1990s prospective, population-based studies were lacking. Several metodologically fine studies assessing the risk of malignancy in patients with confirmed CD in comparison with general population were published during last 15 years. In general, these papers confirm an increase in the incidence and mortality among patients with newly recognized CD. However, the risk of malignacy seems to be lower than previously estimated. Additionally, it has been proved, that the risk is going to be noticeably reduced in patients strictly adherent to gluten free diet. Some authors conclude that in patients with early recognized and properly treated CD, the risk of malignancy remains the same as in general population. The paper summarizes the results of the most important studies on the epidemiology of malignancies in patients with CD.
