The risk of venous thromboembolism in users of combined hormonal contraception

Journal Title: Ginekologia i Położnictwo medical project - Year 2019, Vol 52, Issue 2

Abstract

Combined hormonal contraceptives are widely used and very effective methods of birth control. This heterogeneous group of pharmacological agents includes medicines with various types and doses of estrogens and progestins, and different routes of administration. Hence there is a possibility of different non-contraceptive actions, side effects and adverse reactions depending on the type of the used product. One of the most serious, rare but significant complications of combined hormonal contraception is increased risk of venous thromboembolism. The current literature contains no large prospective randomized controlled trials that would conclusively state which products are superior over others in terms of safety associated with thrombosis. Available cohort and observational studies provide certain premises that may influence individualized selection of contraceptives ensuring the most optimal risk–benefit balance in terms of thromboembolism.
