Abstract

Honey, let’s save our kids! is a TV show, which was broadcasted on Polish TV in 2016. It was based on the format of a BBC reality show Honey, we’re killing the kid. Each episode presents a family, which, according to the invited experts, needs a change of lifestyle, mainly of eating habits and of ways of spending free time. The spectacle begins with a visualization of a future of the child, who is usually defined as obese at the moment. Basing on biomedical and psychological tests, experts prepare a visualization of a child at the age of 45. Parents, and sometimes grandparents, are confronted with the child’s future, which, in the beginning of the episode is predicted to be problematic, painful, burdened by illness and unattractive appearance. After metamorphosis the characters’ future is shown in brighter colors. After a couple of weeks the host of the show visits the family and checks whether the intervention of experts resulted in positive outcome (i.e. weight loss). On the one hand, the program goes in line with the health promotion projects, and on the other hand it presents some issues as pathology, whereas from another point of view they may seem normal. This process of pathologization becomes a TV spectacle.
