THE ROLE OF AFGHAN TRIBES IN THE COLLAPSE OF SAFAVID DYNASTY

Abstract

As from the early of XVIth century, the State of Safavid that conquered Persia, kept its presence as the most important political power of the region until the early of XVIIIth century, though there were Ottoman Empire in the west and Turkestan Khanates in the east and being neighbor with the Baburids in South. Safavids also entered into a tremendous fight in every three aspects and gained important achievements during their over two hundred years of sovereignty in order to expand their ruling area take control of the trade way along Persia and disseminate the Shiite sect that they dignified as national belief. Yet, in earlies of XVIIIth century, the most important issue that Safavids dealt with was the problem of Afghan tribes that getting more and more powerful in Herat and Kandahar. One by one Defeat of the armies sent by Safavids in order to conquer and keep under dominance of Kandahar by the tribes of Afghan caused destabilization in Persia and after a while, tribes dragged Safavid Dynasty into collapse by occupying Isfahan. In our study, the role of Ghiljies and Abdalis from Afghan tribes during the collapse of Safavid has been tackled.
