The Role of Endogenous Antimicrobial Peptides in the Bacterial Colonization of the Nasopharynx in Children with Hyperplasia of the Pharyngeal Tonsil

Journal Title: Здоров`я дитини - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 74

Abstract

We have investigated the level of antimicrobial peptides in the blood serum of 35 children with adenoiditis associated with hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil. It was found that children with hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil showed a reduction in the content of serum catelicidin LL-37, surfactant protein SP-D, bactericidal permeability-increasing protein, and an increase in the level of lactoferrine. It is proved that impaired production of antimicrobial peptides is one of the pathogenetic factors for chronic inflammation in the hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil in children. The severity of these changes depends on the degree of hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil and is manifested maximally in the adenoid vegetations degree 3. Factor of compensation aimed to restore an adequate immune reactivity in children with hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil is the development of hyperplasia of the palatine tonsils that should be considered when planning the extent of therapeutic interventions.
