The Role of Forces in Engineering Applications: Friction, Gravity, and Tension-A Review

Abstract
The role of forces in engineering applications: friction, gravity, and tension. Friction, gravity, and tension are forces commonly used in engineering. It is important to be able to identify each type of force acting on an object and to be able to accurately calculate the force in engineering problems. Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other and occurs in many engineering applications including cars, bicycles, and spacecrafts. Gravity is the natural force of attraction exerted by a celestial body, such as Earth, upon objects at or near its surface. This force gives weight to physical objects and is commonly used in engineering problems involving liquids or rigid bodies. It is important to be able to identify the direction and magnitude of friction and gravity for use in solving common engineering problems. The occurrence, causes, and influences of tension in various types of material including rods, cables, ligaments, and tissues are discussed in the context of such engineering applications as the tensioning of bicycle and motorcycle spokes, the tightening of bolt-nut systems, and muscular tension. It is important to be able to accurately calculate the tension in a string or cable when it is subjected to gravity loading or loading that causes it to be elongated. To aid in this understanding, a method for detecting and calculating the tension force exerted by cable rigging devices is also described. All of these topics are based on physical principles that involve lots of mathematical and kinematic modeling. The principles and applicable engineering knowledge are derived to provide the students with a rich educational experience in the classroom and practical design tools for solving real-world engineering problems
