The Role of Religion in the Bosnian War of 1992-1995
Journal Title: Chorzowskie Studia Polityczne - Year 2015, Vol 10, Issue
Abstract
The Bosnian War of 1992-1995 was not only extremely gory, but also very complex in that it is difficult to establish its causes and conclusively identify those responsible for the unprecedented outbreak and escalation of hostilities, or even delineate its actual magnitude. One of the critical factors behind the conflict was religion, which was indeed often cited by the warring parties as a motivation for their actions. While, on the one hand, most unspeakable crimes were committed in the name of God/Allah, on the other, clashes and tensions could be also observed within each of the religious communities. It could be therefore concluded that religion was to a large extent treated as an instrument that would come in handy in certain situations and contexts, which is what the paper aims to fully demonstrate.
