THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS VARIABLES IN REASONS FOR LIVING AND SUICIDE PREVENTION

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of some religious variables in reasons for living and suicide prevention. The sample was 799 volunteers (444 female, 354 male) ranged ages 18-68 (Mean: 34; S: 12.23). Socio-demographic form, Reasons for Living Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, God Image Scale, Brief RCOPE, and The Ways of Coping Questionnaire were used. At the result of this study, there are positive relations between reasons for living and positive God image, positive religious coping and some variables related to religiosity spirituality. Moreover some positive religious/spiritual perceptions predict the reasons for living; on the other hand lower perceived religiosity is a predictive variable for suicide probability. In the light of these findings, it is understood that positive spiritual perceptions are significantly relation with reasons for living and that positive spiritual perceptions may be effective factors to prevent somebody from committing suicide.
