The role of vitamin D in chronic viral hepatitis

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2014, Vol 27, Issue 11

Abstract

Previously thought to influence mostly calcium and phosphate homeostasis, vitamin D turns out to affect a variety of other functions in human body. Its deficiency may observed in the cardiovascular, autoimmune and metabolic diseases. By modulation of the immune system vitamin D may also influence the course of neoplastic and infectious diseases. Moreover, as vitamin D is converted to its active metabolite in the liver, liver pathologies are often accompanied by vitamin D deficiency. The investigation of the factors that may improve response to viral treatment in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV) continues. Vitamin D deficiency seems to occur commonly also in this particular group of patients. Recently much research focused on the influence of vitamin deficiency on hepatitis C and hepatitis B infection has been done. The aim of the following article is to overview current knowledge about the prevalence and impact of both vitamin D deficiency and its supplementation on the course of viral hepatitis.
