The significance of proper hand hygiene and awareness of contaminated objects in a healthcare setting.
Journal Title: World Journal of Medical Images, Videos and Cases - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue
Abstract
Cultivation of fingerprints on agar plates was done in order to observe presence of microbes on hands before and after handwashing and after subsequent use of alcohol solution. The handwashing was done according to the latest WHO guidelines. On the surplus agar plates, the students were given the opportunity to sample their body and other objects. Among the collected samples were swabs from scrota and penis, as well as inanimate objects such as smartphones, wrist-watches, coins and jewellery. The success of the handwashing technique was reflected by the decreasing growth of microbial colonies. All samples, both animate and inanimate produced visible microbial growth after 24 h. These results should serve as a good graphic motivation for handwashing and regular object disinfection in healthcare settings.
