Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Wyższej Szkoły Humanitas Zarządzanie - Year 2013, Vol 14, Issue 2

Abstract

Beyond all question, the most important element of development residing inside a company is its staff. It is acknowledged that the staff development constitutes a management area which is strongly combined with a broadly defined development of a company. Therefore, within the context of an increasing competition, the workforce strengthening by means of competence development, seems to be the most vital. Family businesses also face this challenge. The numerous research results show that trainings are not their strengths. Apart from practical or organizational obstacles, including mainly: a high cost of a training, the lack of plans concerning human resources, different ways of perceiving the training needs by the owners and the staff or unsuitable programs, the companies struggle with inner obstacles coming from their specifics such as: power in the hands of one person (mainly a senior), nepotism in the sphere of personal politics and organizational culture as well as many others. There are examples, when the family conditionings have lead to the bankruptcy of quite a few companies with sound economic footing. The article shows different functional problems of family businesses, among others, a problem with professional development of the employees. It also takes an attempt to indicate some solutions, which give a possibility to raise activity in the scope of staff development.
