The use of trace compounds to assess environmental hazard in the Bieszczady National Park
Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 1
Abstract
In the period 2002–2005 in the eastern part of the Bieszczady National Park concentration of phytotoxic gases (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone) and PAHs was measured using passive samplers. Contents of heavy metals and PAHs in spruce needles was also determined. The permissible levels for plants of mean annual sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide concentrations were not exceeded. Ozone is only phytotoxic gas posing threat to the health status of trees. Air and spruce needles analyses showed the presence of carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the Park area. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in the vicinity of the destructive dry distillation of wood facilities. Concentrations of heavy metals in spruce needles were found to be at a normal level.
