Theoratical study on scaling up of a rotating disc contactor (RDC)

Abstract
The scale up of three different scales of rotating disc contactor (RDC) (inner diameters are 0.05 m, 0.29 m, 2.4 m for laboratory scale, pilot scale and industry scale RDC respectively) is numerically studied based on fundamental theory of solvent extraction. The results show that as RDC scales up, its superficial velocity, characteristic velocity, drop size and height of a diffusion unit increase, while the total mass transfer coefficient decreases, so the mass transfer efficiency for a large size RDC is relatively low, i.e. scale up effect exists for RDC.
