Therapeutic adequacy in a socio-sanitary residence

Journal Title: Archives of Nursing Research - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective: To determine the degree of therapeutic appropriateness of the status of residents in a social and health care residence, and the associated factors. Patients and method: Cross-sectional study, conducted at the "Los Molinos" Residence for the Elderly in Mota del Cuervo, Cuenca Province (Spain). The sample consisted of 53, randomly identified, users. Data were collected on age, sex, type and number of prescriptions, assessment of functional and cognitive status, and interventions of the Geriatric Registrar. Results: The prevalence of polypharmacy patients (five or more drugs) was 88.7%. The mean MAI (Medication Appropriateness Index) was 6.6 (SD 5.3). The relationship of the number of drugs with the therapeutic appropriateness was found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). For the other variables, the relationship was apparently important but did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: The therapeutic appropriateness of the study population is acceptable. The interest of this type of study in geriatrics must be stressed.
