THERMODYNAMIC ASPECTS FILM STARVATION IN FRICTION UNITS

Abstract

The paper considers the role of the surface tension in tribology. The experimentally determined surface tension of certain lubricants and its temperature dependence. It is shown that the graphic interpretation of the nature of changes the dynamic viscosity engine oils and their surface tension (the intersection of the field lines of the graphs) allows to determine the temperature interval in the contact zone for the most favorable manifestations of body-surface properties of film formation in order to prevent violations of their continuity. For the considered motor oils Trab≈16-39 ° C. A thermodynamic model of the viscosity of the lubricant condition and optimization of friction units. A decrease in the thickness of the lubricant film below the critical value leads to the fact that the lubricating effect begins to disappear, and a transition to a mode of dry friction or film starvation.
